Why Simplicity Is the Right Route to Better Sustainability
Erwin Hasselbrinck, Sep 4, 2025

With every step we take, we’re proving that less is more. It’s more care, more connection, and more respect for the planet.
Day one at Neat. New role. One burning question:
“What does sustainability actually mean here?”
As Neat’s new Senior Manager of Sustainability in R&D, I walked in expecting generalities. To my delight, what did I find? A team already asking the same question, straight-up, curious, without pretense.
That raw, real energy sparked a fire in me. At Neat, sustainability isn’t a checkbox – it’s a living, evolving conversation baked into our company culture. We might not have every answer yet, but the drive to find them is in our DNA.
No posturing, just progress
Hence, we’re launching a sustainability blog series not to flaunt curated answers, but to show you the real, unfiltered work behind the scenes.
We’re lifting the lid on how we’re building a culture grounded in environmental, social, and corporate responsibility, one bold, messy, meaningful step at a time.
No fluff. No greenwashing. Just raw progress. Tough questions. Shared ownership. And the drive to make it real, and more importantly, make it last.
Less is better
Technology has power–real power–to shape a sustainable world. But it comes with consequences. Every choice leaves a lasting footprint, from energy use and sourcing to privacy and data ethics.
Since Neat was established in 2019, one question has shaped our research and development (R&D):
How can we create simple, innovative, and more sustainable video communication hardware and software that stay true to our Scandinavian design heritage, where less is better?
Thoughtfully made. Responsibly used. Built to last.
That mindset has led us to real results:
- Reduced packaging – minimal plastics, less waste, and a direct cut in CO₂ emissions
- 50% recycled plastic in our Board devices – without compromising on style, performance, or our signature clean aesthetic
- Energy-saving software – auto-awake and wake-on-tap cut energy use by 80% when a device is in sleep mode
- Modular design setup – in the rare case of repair, you only need to replace a part or the device, not the entire system. No scrap, no waste
From initiatives to purpose
The next challenge is turning well-intended, driven actions into a comprehensive sustainability strategy and culture that remains true to our core purpose of simplicity.
How can we build teams that genuinely prioritize environmental and social responsibility?
As an initial step, we’re taking a bold approach to ownership through authorship, empowering “Neaters” to co-create the path forward.
Introducing the Neat Sustainability Forum: cross-functional Neat teams auditing our entire product lifecycle–from design to disposals–informing short, mid, and long-term priorities.
In other words, we’ll all be helping shape the strategy, not just execute it. Because when everyone has a hand in creating the path forward, it becomes something to believe in and something we’re all accountable for.
It’s just the beginning
Fueled by a caring, curious, and relentless passion, the Neat Sustainability Forum serves as our moral compass, transforming ideas into strategy and strategy into action.
